Staying safe on the road when the rains come
A few simple habits can make wet-weather journeys safer for drivers, riders and pedestrians.
Heavy rain changes how roads behave. These reminders apply to anyone travelling in wet weather.
If you are driving or riding
- Slow down. Wet roads need a longer distance to stop.
- Switch on your lights so others can see you.
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
- Do not drive through water if you cannot see how deep it is.
If you are walking
- Stay clear of the roadside where vehicles can splash or slide.
- Take extra care at crossings, and wait until drivers have clearly seen you.
Before you set off
Check your tyres and wipers, charge your phone and tell someone where you are going. Tune in for travel and weather information whenever it is available.
